Who says lawyers don’t have a sense of humor?
Bay Area Corporate Counsel honorees had the sold-out crowd chuckling — and reflecting — throughout the evening at the 2018 Bay Area Corporate Counsel awards dinner on March 1 at the Four Seasons Hotel in East Palo Alto.
Mitch Gaynor of Marvell Technology Group noted that his “nomination was so flattering it borders on fake news.”
Joshua Stein of Zenefits, who was honored in the Under Pressure category, joked as he accepted the award: “This is a much tougher crowd than the SEC,” adding, “There are a lot of law firms whose partners’ kids will now have a college education.”
Stein was corporate counsel at Zenefits when the software company for human resources had some issues with licensing arrangements.
In all seriousness, several honorees talked about how their roles as lawyers bring extra meaning to their lives. Scott Andrews of eBay, one of this year’s Outstanding Pro Bono honorees, noted: “It’s a real pleasure to get out and put on my kiss-a– hat.”
