In-House Pro Bono Benchmarking Data Now Available

The Wire
June 2011

Corporate Pro Bono recently published the 2010 In-House Pro Bono Benchmarking Survey, which highlights several key trends that CPBO observed in in-house pro bono in 2010. The report includes responses from 35 legal departments, each of them Signatories to the Corporate Pro Bono Challenge℠. The benchmarking data enables legal departments to compare their pro bono programs and projects with those of other departments. As in-house pro bono evolves, CPBO will regularly expand and update these materials.

The report cites a number of interesting findings, including:

  • Nearly 92 percent of responding legal departments involve non-lawyers in their pro bono efforts;
  • More than 54 percent of respondents allocate a portion of the department’s budget to pro bono; and
  • 68 percent of respondents partner with an outside firm on pro bono.

The respondents represented companies from a variety of industries located in various regions in the United States and included among others:

  • Accenture plc
  • Deere & Company
  • Intel Corporation
  • The Pep Boys-Manny, Moe & Jack
  • United Parcel Service, Inc.
