The Pro Bono Wire
April 25, 2013
CPBO is pleased to welcome six new members to its Advisory Board. These in-house leaders are committed to promoting in-house pro bono, and PBI and CPBO look forward to working with them and other members of the CPBO Advisory Board to further advance the pro bono efforts of in-house attorneys.
The new members of the Advisory Board are:
Ivan K. Fong
Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs and General Counsel
3M Company**
Ivan Fong is a long-time supporter of pro bono and a returning member of the CPBO Advisory Board, having served when he was the chief legal officer of Cardinal Health, Inc.** While at Cardinal Health, Fong signed the CPBO ChallengeSM as a Charter Signatory, committing to encourage the legal department to engage in legal pro bono work. In October 2012, Fong joined another Charter Signatory, 3M Company, as senior vice president, legal affairs, and general counsel. His previous positions include general counsel of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, senior vice president and general counsel of GE Vendor Financial Services, and law clerk to Justice O’Connor of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Like Fong, Brett Hart has supported the growth of in-house pro bono for many years and previously served on the CPBO Advisory Board. Recently, he joined CPBO, ACC, and other chief legal officers in supporting a successful initiative to remove unnecessary barriers that limited the ability of registered in-house attorneys to provide legal pro bono services in Illinois. Hart is executive vice president, general counsel, and secretary for United Continental Holdings, Inc., a signatory to the CPBO ChallengeSM. Previously, he was executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at Sara Lee Corporation, a CPBO ChallengeSM charter signatory.
Gloria Santona
Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary
McDonald’s Corporation**
Gloria Santona has been critical to the success of McDonald’s Corporation’s legal department’s pro bono program, which celebrates its 13th anniversary this year. A tremendous supporter of pro bono, Santona’s leadership, along with pro bono efforts by McDonald’s, have been recognized by many. Santona and the McDonald’s legal department joined the CPBO ChallengeSM in 2010. Her career at McDonald’s started upon graduation from law school. Santona was named McDonald’s general counsel in 2001.
John F. Schultz
Executive Vice President and General Counsel
Hewlett-Packard Company**
John Schultz has worn several hats while supporting in-house pro bono, including being a strong leader of Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) legal department’s global pro bono program and co-chair of the Pro Bono Institute’s 2012 Annual Dinner. In April 2012, he was named executive vice president and general counsel for HP, a CPBO ChallengeSM Signatory. Previously, Schultz was deputy general counsel at HP for litigation investigations and global functions, managing HP’s major litigation around the globe.

The Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack**
