Congratulations to PBI’s 2017 Zelon Awardee!

On the evening of Thursday, March 9, at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, PBI will host its Annual Conference Reception and present the 2017 Laurie D. Zelon Pro Bono Award to the legal department of Exelon Corporation** for its pro bono efforts and leadership. Headquartered in Chicago, with legal department staff in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., Exelon is engaged in pro bono in each of those communities. Senior Vice President and General Counsel Thomas S. O’Neill will accept the award on behalf of Exelon’s legal department.

Exelon, a charter signatory to the CPBO Challenge® initiative, began its formal pro bono efforts 15 years ago when it adopted a pro bono policy encouraging pro bono engagement by legal department staff. At the time, pro bono was still a relatively new endeavor for in-house departments. Since then, Exelon has developed programs that involve almost all of its more than 100 attorneys and nearly as many support staff in pro bono. Led by dedicated local pro bono leaders, members of the Exelon legal department are engaged in matters ranging from single-day clinics drafting end-of-life documents to immigration litigation lasting years. In addition, Exelon has worked to expand in-house counsel engagement in pro bono by inviting other legal departments to join their pro bono efforts. Exelon has also incorporated pro bono into its evaluation of outside counsel.

Join PBI for the presentation of the award by attending the 2017 PBI Annual Conference Reception.
