Walgreen Co. Joins the CPBO Challenge℠

The Wire
November 2011

Tom Sabatino, newly appointed executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Walgreen Co.**, is a longtime pro bono supporter and friend of PBI and has signed onto the Challenge as one of his first acts. Sabatino has overseen vibrant pro bono programs in his previous general counsel positions at United-Continental Holdings**, and Schering-Plough, a Challenge Signatory until it merged with Merck & Co., Inc.**.

The CPBO Challenge℠ is a voluntary statement of commitment to pro bono service by legal departments, their lawyers and staff. The Challenge provides corporate legal departments a tool to identify, benchmark, and communicate their commitment to pro bono service. As part of the Challenge, Chief Legal Officers encourage and promote pro bono service by their legal department staff and use their best efforts to encourage at least one-half of their legal staff to support and participate in pro bono service. In addition, Chief Legal Officers encourage outside law firms with whom they work to acknowledge publicly their support for pro bono by becoming signatories to the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge®.

Signatory legal departments receive information, guidance, and tailored support from Corporate Pro Bono to strengthen their existing pro bono programs or start new ones – all free of charge. To learn more about the Challenge or how your legal department can become a Signatory, contact CPBO Director Eve Runyon.
