Corporate Counsel

Legal departments, even those at major companies, often avoid using their lawyering talents to serve any client but their corporate client.
But not 3M Co. Ivan Fong, the company’s general counsel, finds that doing pro bono work is an important way for the 260 lawyers he supervises around the globe to gain solid experience doing interesting legal work while supporting their communities at the same time.
Whether it’s helping a refugee fleeing Syria gain asylum in Germany, or helping to win a new sentencing hearing for a death row inmate in Texas, Fong takes pride in his team’s work.
“I happen to think it is one of the most fun and rewarding things we do as legal department,” Fong told Corporate Counsel in a recent interview, after releasing 3M’s latest annual pro bono report.
