Colorado Lawyers Provide Pro Bono Assistance to Local Nonprofits

On February 1, 2011, Corporate Pro Bono hosted a Clinic in a Box℠ program in partnership with the Colorado Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, the Community Resource Center, the Colorado Nonprofit Association, Colorado Lawyers Committee, and Hogan Lovells LLP.  The Clinic, an off-the-shelf pro bono program developed by Corporate Pro Bono for in-house counsel, attracted 25 volunteers from the greater Denver area.

Held at the Community Resource Center, the Clinic offered in-house counsel the opportunity to conduct a legal audit to assess the legal health of nine participating nonprofit organizations.  The Community Resource Center and the Colorado Nonprofit Association recruited the client organizations for participation in the Clinic.

The Clinic began with an hour and a half training session for the in-house lawyers led by Keith Trammell of Hogan Lovells.  The volunteers then met with the nonprofits to conduct a two and half hour legal audit.  In addition to the audit, volunteers also addressed some of the clients’ more specific legal needs. Many of the volunteers will continue to provide counsel to the nonprofits on an on-going basis.

Prior to the clinic, the volunteers received comprehensive training materials that were developed by Corporate Pro Bono and updated in accordance with Colorado law by experts from Hogan Lovells.  These materials will prove invaluable for the volunteer attorneys who continue to provide legal advice for their small business client.

Combined, the nine nonprofits serve nearly 7,000 low-income people in the Denver area.  The organizations provide assistance by creating and preserving housing opportunities for low-income households, hosting social and recreational activities for adults with developmental disabilities, offering after-school and summer programming for low-income rural youth, and delivering empowerment programs for young women.
