A Voice for Veterans

The PBEye
November 9, 2012

November 11 is Veterans Day, and on that day Americans will pay tribute to our nation’s armed service members, many of whom have recently returned from deployments around the world and done difficult and dangerous assignments to protect our country. As a country, we provide the necessities for them to perform their duties, but taking care of our troops should not stop when they come home.  Service members returning from war often suffer from extraordinary mental and physical disabilities, high unemployment rates, burdensome legal paperwork, and bureaucratic hurdles to obtain disability, discharge, and veteran benefits. Providing pro bono services to eligible veterans is a unique opportunity for lawyers to honor those who have served our country.

The PBEye is privileged to be able to shine the spotlight on our veterans and has a variety of resources for law firms and legal departments looking to explore veterans-related pro bono opportunities. Here are just a few:

  1. Listen to our webinar Pro Bono in Practice: Veterans.  Experts in the field discuss emerging issues, how to get started, and opportunities for collaboration.  The webinar also covers whether and how, given the state of the law and legal needs, veterans-related pro bono delivery systems can be taken to scale, in ways that range from litigation to policy work.
  2. Come to the 2012 Annual Dinner where you can hear our special guest Aimee Sherrod’s story.  After a lengthy struggle and pro bono assistance from Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP*†and Hewlett Packard**, Aimee eventually received the military retirement benefits to which she was entitled.
  3. Check out examples of firms and legal departments that are partnering with public interest organizations across the country to secure benefits for veterans.

How are you honoring our veterans through pro bono service?  Leave a comment and share your experience.
