“As a lawyer for the in-house legal department of United Continental Holdings Inc., Steven Fus spends most of his time handling transactions and compliance issues for the Chicago-based airline. But one morning a month he heads south on Clark Street to the Richard J. Daley Center and crosses into a different world.

Mr. Fus, 53, volunteers at the expungement desk operated by Cabrini Green Legal Aid inside the criminal department of the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s office. Five days a week in a makeshift office—three tables, two cubicle dividers and an American flag—lawyers counsel people on their eligibility to have minor offenses sealed or expunged from their criminal record.”
